In Schoenberg’s arrangement of Gustav Mahler’s Song of the Earth, we encounter a meditation on mortality and rebirth, composed in the shadow of profound personal tragedy. Drawing from ancient poetry, Mahler weaves aching beauty with existential yearning fusing his career-long themes of nature and the cycles of life. LEARN MORE

The Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO) is WYO's top orchestra. It is open to advanced students seeking challenging music and orchestral training. WYSO performs one to two “masterworks” a semester by major composers in addition to smaller works and collaborations with other ensembles. Open to advanced players, admission is through competitive audition with students being in 8th grade and above. Average size is 90 - 100 students, depending on repertoire. WYSO string, wind, brass and percussion members also have the benefit of working with monthly coaches and mentors, learning further orchestral and instrumental technique. The orchestra celebrated its 70th Anniversary with a performance of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Choral Finale with The Worcester Chorus & Nashoba Valley Chorale.

Consider the first half of this program its own “mechanical symphony!” A sonic palette that celebrates humans in motion, the repertoire includes works by contemporary composer Stefan Thompson on the hustle and bustle of tourists in his native Bahamas, the machinistic whirs of Russian iron and steel factories as wrought by Alexander Mosolov and Sergei Prokofiev, and the chugging, churning charm of 20th century land travel through the imaginations of Arthur Honegger and John Adams. In the second half, four pulsing strokes of the timpani transition us from the composed clamor of machines to Beethoven’s broad and lyrical Violin Concerto, featuring guest violinist Nathan Amaral.

THOMPSON – Jitneys and Cruiseships
MOSOLOV – Iron Foundry
HONEGGER – Pacific 231
PROKOFIEV – The Steel Step Suite
ADAMS – Short Ride in a Fast Machine
BEETHOVEN – Violin Concerto

Special Guest: Nathan Amaral, violin
