Marshall Crenshaw

with special guest James Mastro

Born in 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at age ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John Lennon in “Beatlemania”, first as an understudy in New York, then in the West Coast company, followed by a national touring company. Removing himself from that situation in Feb. 1980, Marshall settled in New York City. Enthralled by the hyper-diverse musical culture of the City, and the local Rock scene in particular, Marshall formed a Rock and Roll band with brother Robert on drums and Chris Donato on bass.

After crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock, Marshall recorded his debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” for Betrock’s Shake Records label; at nearly the same time, legendary Rockabilly singer Robert Gordon’s recording of Marshall’s “Someday Someway” was released as a single on the RCA label. These two records simultaneously broke big on New York’s WNEW-FM, causing Marshall and his trio’s local popularity to explode.
And so began a career that’s spanned four decades, 13 albums, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations, film and TV appearances (Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of live performances. Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of artfulness, and passion, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and loyal fan base.

Brooks Williams

Brooks Williams is one of those select few ‘'how on earth does he do it?” artists. He can sing. He can write. And, man oh man, can he play guitar.

Cambridge UK-based, Statesboro, Georgia US-born, admired by both listeners and fellow musicians, Brooks Williams has been a leading light on the acoustic music scene for three decades. FATEA says his performances show “the greatest level of true expertise.”

Listed as one of the ‘Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists,’ his guitar skills are evident as he effortlessly slides in and out of folk, blues and country. "He was playing Americana before it had been given the name,” says CMP . “How soulful a solo guitarist can be when he has talent, taste and astonishing technique,” writes Blues Revue.

David Francey

David Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, whose deeply human songwriting has made him “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star).

Immigrating to Toronto at age twelve, Francey spent decades working in rail yards, construction sites, and the Yukon bush, quietly composing songs drawn from everyday life. It wasn’t until his 40s, with the encouragement of his wife, artist Beth Girdler, that he began performing publicly. His 1999 debut album Torn Screen Door was an instant success and launched a celebrated musical career.

Natalie Merchant Grateful Friends Fundraiser

Natalie Merchant

Grateful Friends Fundraiser

Natalie has graciously agreed to perform at The Cabot in support of Grateful Friends, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping adult cancer patients undergoing treatment.

Natalie accepted the invitation from Bill Beckman, husband of Grateful Friends Board President Becky Beckman. Bill and his late wife Mary Beckman were dear friends of Natalie growing up and performed musically together in the Westfield/Jamestown, NY area.

This very special concert will serve not only as a fundraiser but also as a heartfelt tribute to Mary, who passed away ten years ago from metastatic breast cancer. In her memory, Becky Beckman now leads Grateful Friends with passion and purpose. Natalie’s performance will celebrate their enduring friendship and honor Mary’s legacy, along with so many others, by supporting people on their cancer journey.

We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an inspiring and meaningful evening.
