At 26 years old, Grammy-nominated Yonder Mountain String Band continues to exist at the forefront of the progressive bluegrass scene as one of the undeniable innovators and pioneers of the modern jamgrass movement.

Bending bluegrass with elements of rock, alternative and improvisational music, Yonder Mountain brought their high-energy, sound and psychedelic light show into rock n’ roll settings with tremendous success, proving it possible for a bluegrass band to not only exist but excel in a rock world without drums. The inroads they made created opportunities for like-minded acoustic bands to perform at festivals, rock clubs, theaters and stadiums previously considered off-limits for string bands.

Her constantly innovative and meaningful scores continue to be featured in every part of the globe. Turbulent Landscapes was inspired by seven paintings by socially conscious English impressionist J.M.W. Turner. Commissioned and premiered by the Boston Symphony in 2003, each of the strikingly descriptive movements will feature one of SPM’s principal players. Framing Turbulent Landcases are the bustling depiction of English sailors in Walton’s Portsmouth Point Overture and Elgar’s beloved Nimrod Variations, a series of touching tributes to fourteen of the composer’s closest friends.

In this life, very few friendships withstand the test of time. Naturally, people go their separate ways and chase their own dreams. As rare as it may be for friendships to last a lifetime, it might be even rarer for a band to stick together for the long haul. For close to four decades, the members of Big Head Todd and The Monsters—Todd Park Mohr [vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica], Brian Nevin [drums], Rob Squires [bass, vocals], and Jeremy Lawton [keyboards, lap pedal/steel guitar, vocals]—have continued to both throw down in the studio and light up stages worldwide. Rallying around a core vision, the platinum-selling Colorado quartet kick out the kind of blues-drenched rock ‘n’ roll bangers that make you want to rev the engine a little louder, sing along like no one’s looking, and live a little freer.

01-26-2025 7:30 pm

THIS SHOW IS RESCHEDULED FROM NOV 7, 2024. ALL TICKETS  AUTOMATICALLY TRANSFERED TO THE NEW DATE.

Billy Prine is a natural-born storyteller just like his late, great brother John Prine was a natural-born songwriter.  John was a great communicator of the human experience whittled down to the best words.  His big, little brother, owner of a rich, booming voice yet full of subtleness, is one of the finest orators you’ll ever hear – also choosing just the right turn of phrase.

During these concerts celebrating John’s life in song, Billy will tell stories about or surrounding some of John’s most beloved songs before leading his band through his version of John’s timeless masterpieces. As an example, fans will get to hear the first time John played his classic song “Paradise” for their father as the family sat around the kitchen table.

A Far Cry - Daybreak

01-31-2025 7:30 pm

Musical Program

Quinn Mason | Svítání for String Orchestra
Ludwig van Beethoven | Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, arr. for String Sextet by Michael Gotthard Fischer; adapted for String Orchestra by AFC

Curated by Crier Michael Unterman
Featuring Project STEP’s Honors Quartet and Student winners from the New England Conservatory Fellows competition.

Last season A Far Cry “scaled up” Beethoven’s quartets. This season is our first time performing what curator Michael Unterman calls a “sporty” arrangement of a symphony! The iconic “Pastorale” symphony is boiled down to its essence and paired with Quinn Mason’s Svítáni for a refreshing exploration. Daybreak’s sunrise-inspired program offers an escape from the depths of Boston’s winter.
